Standing on the sacred ground of hardened lava I was so inspired by the process of how nature flows. When a volcano erupts- the initial contact between a lava flow, the air above it, and ground surface below it, quickly hardens the outer crust of the flow. This is apparent in the silvery crust that forms on active pāhoehoe flows and the rubbly clinker that surrounds active 'a'ā flows. I wanted to physically create this natural phenomenon in an artful process. The art is made the same way the rock is formed.

Kīlauea is an active shield volcano in the Hawaiian Islands. It is located along the southeastern shore of Hawaii Island. There is a trail where you can walk right through the crater - this sacred experience gave my inspiration for this piece.

Molten Lava inspired by Hawaii’s Volcanos National Park volcano Kīlauea. Mixed media on canvas wooden framed, Matt black finish. Measures 32” tall by 24” wide by 2” deep
